How to Calculate a Discount
Calculating a discount is a common task whether you're shopping during a sale or creating pricing for your own business. The process is simple and can be done in two main ways.
Method 1: Calculate Savings First
This is the most intuitive method. You first determine the value of the discount (how much you save) and then subtract it from the original price.
Step 1: Find the Savings Amount
Savings = Original Price × (Discount % / 100)
Step 2: Calculate the Final Price
Final Price = Original Price - Savings
Example: An item costs $80 and is on sale for 25% off.
- Savings =
$80 × (25 / 100) = $20. - Final Price =
$80 - $20 = $60.
Method 2: Calculate Final Price Directly
This is a quicker method if you only need the final price. You calculate the percentage of the price you still have to pay and multiply it by the original price.
Final Price = Original Price × (1 - (Discount % / 100))
Example: Using the same $80 item with a 25% discount.
- You pay 100% - 25% = 75% of the original price.
- Final Price =
$80 × (1 - 0.25) = $80 × 0.75 = $60.
