Understanding Your IP Address

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It serves two main functions: identifying the host or network interface and providing the location of the host in the network.

Public vs. Private IP

Your public IP address (the one shown above) is the main address your home or business network uses to communicate with the rest of the internet. It's assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). In contrast, a private IP address is used within a private network (like your home Wi-Fi) to identify your specific device (e.g., your laptop, phone, or smart TV).

IPv4 vs. IPv6

You may encounter two versions of IP addresses. IPv4 is the older, more common version, consisting of four sets of numbers (e.g., `192.168.1.1`). Due to the rapid growth of the internet, the world is running out of unique IPv4 addresses. IPv6 was created to solve this problem, offering a vastly larger pool of addresses. It looks more complex, using a combination of letters and numbers (e.g., `2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334`).
