Module 5: Lighting and Scene Setup

A great model can be let down by poor presentation. In this module, you'll learn how to set up a simple studio scene and use the classic "three-point lighting" system to make your prototypes look professional.

🔦Common Light Types

While Blender has many light types, these three are your workhorses:

  • Point: Emits light in all directions from a single point, like a bare lightbulb.
  • Sun: Simulates the sun, casting parallel rays. Good for outdoor scenes.
  • Area: Emits light from a surface (a square or circle). This is perfect for creating soft, studio-like shadows and is our primary tool for product shots.
🎬The Three-Point System

This classic setup uses three lights to define a subject:

  • Key Light: The main, brightest light. Placed to one side of the camera to create shape and dimension.
  • Fill Light: A softer light placed on the opposite side to "fill in" and soften the dark shadows created by the Key light.
  • Rim Light: Placed behind the subject, this light creates a bright outline (rim) that separates the object from the background.

Your Task!

Let's create a professional lighting setup for the toggle switch you made in Module 4.


  1. Open your toggle switch scene. Delete the default light if it's still there.
  2. Add a floor: Press Shift + A → Mesh → Plane. Press S and scale it up significantly (e.g., type 20).
  3. Add the Key Light: Press Shift + A → Light → Area Light. Move it up and to the front-left of your switch, angled down. In the Light Properties (lightbulb icon), set its Power to around 200W.
  4. Add the Fill Light: Add another Area Light. Move it to the front-right side. To create softer shadows, increase its Size (e.g., to 2m) and set its Power to be about half of the key light (e.g., 100W).
  5. Add the Rim Light: Add a final Area Light. Move it behind your object, facing towards it. This will create a nice highlight on the edges. You may need to increase its power significantly to see the effect.
  6. At the top-right of the 3D Viewport, switch to Rendered View (the far right sphere icon) to see your lighting in real-time. Adjust the position and power of your lights until you are happy with the result!
